The National Lottery is the national lottery of the United Kingdom. In 1694, the Million Lottery was used to raise funds for the country. The Malt Lottery in 1697 also raised funds for the country. These lotteries created the base for the formation of the Bank of England and the coinage in the United Kingdom.

In 1698, a statute was passed that made lotteries illegal in England unless a law authorized the lottery. Small lotteries were relegalized by small acts in 1934, 1956, and 1976. The government of John Major established the National Lottery in 1993.

In 1994, the Camelot Group became the private operator of this state-franchised lottery. The first drawing of the National Lottery was on November 19, 1994, which makes it one of the youngest world lotteries being less than 30 years old.

30, 3, 5, 44, 14, and 22 were the numbers drawn in the first drawing of the National Lottery. The bonus number for that drawing was 10, and the drawing had seven winners who shared £5,874,778.

In 2002, the National Lottery was redesigned to help stop dropping sales, and it worked. The National Lottery is the most popular type of gambling in England today.

Games of the National Lottery

Lotto-When playing Lotto, a player chooses six numbers between one and fifty-nine. The Lotto has a ‘Lucky Dip’ which will choose the figures for a player randomly. During the draw, six balls are drawn without replacement from a set of fifty-nine numbered balls.

A bonus ball is also drawn that affects players that have matched five numbers. If a player matches at least three of the drawn numbers, he or she wins a prize. With more matched numbers, a player will earn more money.

If a player matches all six numbers, he or she will share in the jackpot. The jackpot can be rolled over until a player matches all six numbers. The jackpot has a guarantee of £10 million.

The Lotto’s drawing happens every Wednesday and Saturday. When the National Lottery was redesigned in 2002, the name was changed to just Lotto.

Lotto Hotpicks-This game uses the main Lotto draw for its number, but it is an entirely different game. A player decides the numbers that will be drawn and how many of those balls will be matched. For example, a player chooses the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 and then he or she would determine how many of those number will be drawn.

With Hotpicks, a player has a choice of five ways to play the game, and each game offers different odds and payouts. The payouts for Hotpicks are as follows:

• Match 1 number win £6
• Match 2 numbers win £60
• Match 3 numbers win £800
• Match 4 numbers win £13,000
• Match 5 numbers win £350,000

Thunderball– A player must choose five numbers from one to thirty-nine and then must choose one ‘Thunderball’ number between one and fourteen. The top prize of this game is £500,000 and is won by matching all five numbers and the ‘Thunderball’ number.

Scratch Cards and Online Instant Wins- Scratch cards were introduced in 1995 and can cost £1, £2, £3, £5, or £10. Scratch cards come in a variety of styles, prizes, and ways to win. The £10 scratchcard has a jackpot of £4,000,000.

Instant Win games are games played online where the player can instantly win prizes. These games can be similar to scratch cards.
