It is everyone’s dream to win the lottery and be in the lap of luxury for the rest of their lives! You may think that the lottery is relatively recent. What you may not have known is that the lottery dates back to hundreds of years. The lottery can be traced back to Moses and the Bible. Moses used a lottery to award land west of the River Jordan. In Europe, lotteries were popular throughout the 15th and 16th centuries.

The first lotteries to offer tickets for sale with monetary prizes date back to the 15th century. In small towns, lotteries were held to help the poor. The lotteries were considered a form of taxation. It was in Genoa that the lottery became popular. People would bet on the names of Council Members. If people wanted to bet more than two times per year, names were substituted with numbers, and it was then that modern lottery was born.
Lotteries were mentioned in the Old Testament. When most people hear the word lottery, they think of scratch of tickets and multimillion dollar jackpots. What most people don’t know is that the first lotteries were actually held by Roman Emperors. They were known as Roman games of chance, with people having to pay a fee in exchange for the chance to win a prize. Sometimes, these prizes were actually in the form of slaves and ships!
After the decline of the Roman Empire, lotteries lost some popularity, but they never fully disappeared. In the 15th century, commercial sweepstakes were held by Italian merchants. Government lotteries were also used as an alternative to taxation.
The earliest medieval examples of lotteries similar to the ones held today can be traced back to the Low Countries, Belgium and the Netherlands. During these times, lotteries were used for both allotting spaces in markets and for the section of public officials. More modern lotteries rose to popularity during the 1400’s, when lotteries were used for a way to raise money for fortifications. After the 1500’s, private lotteries were outlawed. Then came the Class Lottery, where tickets were drawn in a series and value increased the more you moved up the series.
During the 16th century, private lotteries popularized in England. Virginia’s founding of Jamestown was actually funded by a private lottery in the 16th century! The sale of lottery tickets was regulated by the government, and the first lottery agents were actually the first stockbrokers. In medieval times, colleges, schools and churches were funded with lottery proceeds. Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia were funded by lotteries.
Next time you think of the lottery as a modern way for people to win monetary prizes, just remember, lotteries date back hundreds of years with a multitude of uses for the funds.
